NB: Appointments and drop-ins will receive the same consideration. All in-person prelims will be held in the Memorial Hall Basement. Those who will not be on campus by September 3 OR who require virtual accommodations may audition via Zoom. Please sign up for an appointment slot and indicate your reason for requesting a Zoom audition.

2. After your Prelim, you will either…

  1. Be called back for a second audition with a quartet. At this point, you are a member of the Harvard Choruses, which chorus, however, is determined after callbacks (see below).
  2. Be accepted into the Harvard-Radcliffe Chorus. No callback is necessary. OR
  3. Be accepted into Skills for Singing.

Preliminary Auditions (August 31 – September 3 | 5pm-8pm | Memorial Hall Basement)
Everyone auditioning will be placed into an ensemble or course. Our auditions are user-friendly and help us place each singer into the right ensemble. Auditions consist of:

  • Vocalizing (with piano) on various scales and patterns to determine range and evaluate tone
  • Simple melodic patterns we play that you will sing back to us to check your pitch memory
  • A short sight-singing example that we will work on together
  • You sing something for us: either something you’ve prepared (it can be anything: aria, art song, folk song, hymn tune, musical theater number, etc.), or if you didn’t bring anything prepared then we’ll just sing Happy Birthday!

Quartet Callbacks (September 5 – 7)
You will attend a rehearsal (Sunday, Sept. 5) with the choirs in Sanders Theatre. During this rehearsal, you will learn more about the individual groups and rehearse an audition excerpt to perform in a quartet with current choir members.

The quartet audition (September 6 – 7) will last 5-10 minutes. You will have the chance to indicate an ensemble preference at your quartet audition. All auditionees will be notified of their audition results by the end of day, Wednesday, September 8.

If you have any additional questions about the audition process, please email, and one of our student leaders or staff members will get back to you.
